SMS Group High-Speed Wire Rod Mills at Guangdong Guoxin

Chinese Guangdong Guoxin Industrial Co., Ltd. has awarded SMS group the Final Acceptance Certificate after successful commissioning of the two single-strand wire rod mills for its Jieyang works, Guangdong province.

Smooth commissioning and safe operation

The works is designed for an annual capacity of 1.4 million tons (700,000 tons per year per wire rod mill). The two single-strand high-speed mills roll wire rod in diameters from 5.5 to 25 millimeters and rebars in diameters between 6 and 14 millimeters. The originally planned rolling speed of up to 105 meters per second has been exceeded; wire rod sizes have already been rolled at speeds of 120 meters per second. The steel grades to be rolled comprise cold-heading, alloyed, spring and stainless steels as well as tire cord and welding wire.

SMS group supplied the high-speed area mechanical equipment starting from the four-stand pre-finishing mill, shear system in front of the finishing block, 6+4-stand finishing block arrangement, pinch roll, loop laying head and all related water boxes. Due to the well proven 6+4-stand arrangement, all final dimensions can be finish-rolled in a maximum of four passes and thus be rolled thermomechanically, i.e. at low temperatures and with close dimensional tolerances.

Besides the mechanical equipment, SMS group provided the electrical and automation system for the complete line (including motors, drives and sensors), and was responsible for the supervision services for erection and commissioning.

The recent North American steel price recovery has proved short-lived as regional values continued their downward trajectory, this month.

From MEPS research, in September, one US market participant warned steel buyers to “hang onto their hats”. He predicted that US flat product steel prices could fall as quickly as they rose in the first half of the year.

The US steel industry is heavily dependent on the automotive sector. This month, US steel buyers remarked that auto sales have slowed down. Construction activity is at a relatively low level, while the energy sector is unlikely to recover until 2018 at the earliest.

The sustainability of the recent price rises, in the US, hinged upon supply-side considerations. The introduction of import barriers on a number of flat products initially supported the domestic producers.

However, steel imports, into the US, are steadily rising, month-by-month, from countries not covered by the trade cases. The restrictions are unlikely to be strong enough to reverse the negative price tendency that exists currently.

Furthermore, US crude steel production is well below capacity. The re-introduction of ArcelorMittal’s No 3 blast furnace at Indiana Harbour and the ramp up of the Big River facility, in Arkansas, will bring additional supply into the domestic market.

SMS group received final acceptance certificate for reheat furnace revamp

Revamped walking beam furnace with 80 percent fuel savings at ArcelorMittal Asturias

SMS group received the final acceptance certificate for the revamp of a timeworn walking beam furnace from ArcelorMittal Asturias, Spain, in October 2015. Significant energy savings could be realized due to the integration of a new combustion technology and the combustion optimization system SMS PrometheusTM. “SMS group has shown a remarkable commitment in respecting the time schedule and the short planned furnace start-up, displacing at site a competent and proactive crew of skilled engineers”, describes Ramon Garcia Castaño, project manager of ArcelorMittal, the experience with SMS. The revamp has been carried out completely by SMS Meer SpA, Italy, a subsidiary of SMS group.

The project mainly consisted in the redesign and the turn-key reconstruction of the combustion equipment of the 150 tons per hour walking beam furnace in service to the wire rod mill. A special provision was the implementation of the possibility to combust also blast furnace gas along with natural gas, which was previously used solely. The new installation, completed in a rush of just one month of mill stoppage, is a complete technical success, resulting in fuel savings of up to 80 percent.

The combustion system is constantly managed by the newly developed optimization system SMS-PrometheusTM. The system allows targeted improvements of the metallurgical properties, for example increased temperature uniformity or minimized negative effects such as steel decarburization or high scale formation. It also helps to reduce fuel consumption by adopting those heating strategies that minimize the temperature set points and yet guarantee the required final stock target temperature.

Primetals Technologies receives final acceptance for wire rod mill upgrade from OneSteel in Australia

Primetals Technologies has received the final acceptance certificate from OneSteel Market Mills in Australia for installed upgrades at its Laverton Wire Rod Mill. Improvements to the water cooling line and laying head have already resulted in higher finishing speeds on small diameter products. Overall effects of the upgrade are expected to boost the single-strand rod mill’s competitive position in the market.

The water cooling line was upgraded with a Morgan Water Box system, which included three traversing boxes, with split water box nozzles and a header design that ensured alignment of the pass line. A set of skid-mounted valves for each water box incorporated high-speed divert valves to minimize uncooled rings. An Enhanced Temperature Control System (ETCS) with recipes and closed-loop temperature control was installed to control the cooling process. Provisions were made in the layout of the water cooling line for an additional cooling box to meet future needs. The laying head was upgraded with a new design pipe support that incorporates the SR Series laying head pipe technology.

After only four weeks of shutdown time, both the new water boxes and the laying head upgrade were installed and running. As production resumed, mill operators immediately saw performance improvements. More efficient water box cooling has resulted in lower laying head temperatures which improved scale conditions on finished rod, decreasing downstream scale losses by 35 percent on average. Nozzle replacement cycles went from four sizes to two. The ETCS has improved overall yield by reducing uncooled front ends and providing consistent temperature throughout the coil.

The mill can now roll faster on small sizes, with speeds increasing from 90 m/s to 102 m/s on 5.5 mm rod and from 90 m/s to 100 m/s on 6.0 mm rod. There has been significant improvement in ring pattern consistency on the cooling conveyor. The post-upgrade coil package has seen coil height reductions of 50 to 100 mm and a better compacted shape.

Stainless hot rolled coil and plate demand is weak in Western Europe. The market has been subdued, in Italy, since the end of the summer holidays. Market basis figures have slipped, despite the efforts of some EU mills to lift them.

The UK plate market continues to subside. Business has failed to pick up following the summer vacation period. With the price believed to be close to the bottom of the current cycle, the subdued buying activity suggests a lack of confidence in future demand. Post-holiday purchase volumes are also poor in Spain and transaction values keep falling.

Buyers in Western Europe comment that the effect of the EU antidumping measures against cold rolled material from China and Taiwan has been dampened by excess production capacity and poor demand in the region. There have been small reductions to domestic basis numbers, for this product, in Italy.

Sales activity for cold rolled coil was higher than expected, in September, in the UK but has dropped off substantially since then. Demand is poor – described by one market participant as “like a recession”. The antidumping measures are failing to have a positive effect on local selling values in Spain.
